Camera Mundo brings you a world of stories,
dreams and views caught on tape

We know that Brazil houses an extraordinary amount of talented (young) people who produce material that stays inaccessible for a big audience. Most of the materials where born out of a passionate desire to show the particular world they live in from their own point of view, instead of from the point of view of mass media television and film industry.

Other independent filmmakers have years of experience and regularly produce high quality movies, animations or documentaries but cope with the difficulty that Brazil lacks stages for such productions.

The first edition of our festival will present a diverse program of Brazilian independent and low-budget films. Animations, short and feature films, and documentaries will hit Lantaren / Venster, straight from Brasil, for all film lovers!

We’ll be screening a diverse selection of shorts and animations until ’15 minutes; a retrospective of
independent cinema in Brasil from 1968 until now; and exclusive productions from young filmmakers living in slums from the biggest cities in Brasil, to give you an honest overview of Brazilian lifestyle!

A special selection made by the Brazilian independent film club Cachaça Cine Clube and Cavídeo will also be shown. Both organize events that focus on Brazilian cinema for the Brazilian audience.

And obviously a good movie doesn’t go without good sound and food! That’s why we’ll open the festival with a good old Brazilian funk party with sounds from the 70’s till now and will shake
Jazzcafé Dizzy fundaments with excellent live music and food every night.

06/12/2007 Nação won the Diego Award €15.000,-

nacaodiegoaward

Tuesday 4th of december two members of the Nação crew were invited by Plan Nederland all the way from Rio to make some graffiti paintings at the BID challenge award event 2007 in Amsterdam. We had already heard that we didn't make it to the finals of the Business In Development Awards so the invitation was a nice surprise. What we did not know was that Plan Nederland also was awarding business initiatives in relation to development of youth.

So yesterday Braga and Preas were working on their graffiti art in Rio de Janeiro and today they were called upon the stage to receive their prize. The Nação business plan won the Diego Award of Plan Nederland, an amount of €15.000,- to invest in their business and in professionalising their educational programme.

The business plan describes Nação starting up a design agency, opening a gallery and selling merchandise, combining the commercial activities with an educational programme for kids in various favelas in Rio de Janeiro. All members of the Nação crew are teaching kids to design. Starting with graffiti with colours and shapes. When the kids seem to have a talent for design and like to continue working in the creative field, they can also learn to work with professional designers software for graphic design, video editing, animation and webdesign. With this knowledge and skills they will be able to start working as free lance designers in the future.

It is great that Plan Nederland supports us with this Award with which we get not only recognition but also the financial support to start up properly. Thank you very much.

On June 9th another beneficial party will take place in the Pakhuis Wilhelmina in Amsterdam. Caramundo will raise money for a new project of Nação in Rio de Janeiro: the opening of a graffiti-design and audio production school in the favela Sampaio. The money raised, will be used for constructional work and installation of Internet in the favela.

The event will start with the Brazilian documentary “Noticias de uma Guerra Particular” of João Moreira Salles and Kátia Lund. Although the film was shot in 1999, today Rio de Janeiro still suffers from violence similar to Palestinian circumstances. The documentary shows a very realistic and raw view of daily life in Rio de Janeiro, especially for the inhabitants of the favelas. The directors managed to give an insight view in the lives of young gangmembers of drug traffic and soldiers of the military police.

Our special guest for the evening is the electronic experimental oriented duo Lado 2 Estéreo. The duo surprised the Brazilian audience with its crusty samba during a successful tour in Brazil in 2006 and was received with great enthusiasm by respected critics in the Brazilian music scene. Now, Lado 2 Estéreo brings a mixture of electro, samba, punk-rock and experimental electronic sounds with live drum, guitar and voice to the Netherlands. www.lado2estereo.com

What would we be without the always present, unforgettable DJ’s of Rednose Distrikt?! No words can explain. A night isn’t the same without those guys! Check for yourself! www.myspace.com/rednosedistrikt

And last but not at all least, we are glad to receive C.O.N.E. & the Family on stage! The broken and electronic, Brazilian beat of C.O.N.E. with live percussion of The Family makes the party complete. In a special participation Colonel Red (UK) will spit his lyrics on the beats. www.myspace.com/coneaudio

The night will be illustrated by our honourable VJ’s straight from Rotterdam (DA)arom & Iejun! www.mediaontwerpers.nl

After a very successful period on the Latin-American continent, Caramundo has now started its first project in Africa! Caramundo will work closely together with the Dzukani Tiwale Institute from Malawi (‘Dzukani Tiwale’ literally means: ‘Wake up and be proud’) in the capital of Malawi, Lilongwe.

Concerned about the influence of globalization on the traditional culture, the Dzukani Tiwale Institute is busy with the documentation and preservation of many traditional dances and music in the country. Several members of the Institute give performances and educate in dancing, drumming and the making of traditional instruments and costumes. Read more

12/03/2007 OficiNação: Opening of graffiti and audio production school Sampaio

NaçãoGraffiti celebrates the official opening of the graffiti and audio production school in the community of Sampaio, a poor community in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro. With support of the department of culture of the local government of Rio de Janeiro, a pilot of 6 months will be launched on the 25th of March. Another reason to celebrate this with live graffiti on the wall surrounding the entrance of the school and favela up the hill. For this event NaçãoGraffiti invited all local and international writers to paint a bog artwork together while local musicians and Dj´s such as DJ Wagner e os Ousados, Apavoramento and of course the one and only Pagode as voted on by the community itself, will make the sound boost out of the sound system!

On the other side of the wall, 16 soccer teams from different communities of the area will open their seasonal competition.

25/03/2007 TAça de Futebol de Sampaio Community Soccer competition – opening of the season

NAÇAO OPENS FIRST GRAFFITI GALLERY – SEVERO 172 IN RIO DE JANEIRO

In July 2006 Nação opened Rio de Janeiro´s first graffiti gallery in the historical and bohemien centre of the city; Lapa, meetingpoint for streetartists and musicians of all kinds and source of a variety of cultural movements.

Although Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo are Brazil´s biggest cultural capitals, culture has always been food for the elite and inaccesible for the poor population of Brazil. Graffiti came to Rio de Janeiro in the 90´s and functioned as a tool to bring arts and culture to the suburbs of the city.

Opening a graffiti gallery in Rio de Janeiro was the only missing link to create a meeting point for local, national and international graffiti artists who can exhibit their work there, exchange their experiences and knowledge, meet other people with similar interests and represent graffiti in the artistic scene of Rio de Janeiro.

Gallery Severo 172 is fully runned by the Nação crew and is situated in the garage of an old Portuguese colonial building, which gives the gallery a raw character. During daytime the gallery will give space for graffiti workshops for youth of all social backgrounds. At night Severo 172 turns out to be an excellent place for parties, contributing in a great way to Lapa's cultural nightlife.

Turbo Trio for NaçãO

On May 30 th of this year we where honored to receive the Brazilian electro funk and Miami bass-styled Turbo Trio on our party in the Sugarfactory in Amsterdam.
The money we raised with the party is invested in hardware for the graffiti crew Naçao

The live act got illustrated with graffiti visuals by the Pointblank Visuals VJ-crew, which gave an excellent idea of the work Naçao does.

Steven the Peven, Drunken Lion Sound System and Stereo Stereo made the party complete with a mix of Favela Funk, Hiphop, Ragga and Brazilian Electro. For a Tuesday night it was an excellent exception and a great party!

Quarteto PererE and Zeca Collares

Even though Caramundo is known for its’ work in the urban scene, we also like Brazilian folklore sounds from the inlands.
On June 11 th you could have witnessed that in Het Bethaniënklooster in Amsterdam where Quarteto Perer ê and Zeca Collares gave the final concert of their European tour.
The acoustic sounds of the Viola Caipira, the Viola Brasileira the violin and the harmonica and subtle percussion where a moment of delight on this very hot night in June.

Next year we will definitely organize another concert of these very special musicians!
